Immersed in Kantara: A Visual Journey
Kantara is set in the small village of Kaadubettu in South Karnataka and takes place in 1990. The film follows the conflict between a forest officer, portrayed by Kishore, who aims to halt tree felling and convert the land into a forest reserve, and the locals who resist, believing the land was bestowed upon them by their Daiva, the demigod protector of the forest. Rishab Shetty, who plays Shiva, leads the community’s resistance against the forest officials. The film vividly depicts the culture and rituals of Karnataka.
Kantara had its digital release on Amazon Prime Video in Kannada, Tamil, Telugu, and Malayalam. Amazon Prime acquired the streaming rights for a substantial Rs 150 crore, according to Zee News. Additionally, the Hindi version of Kantara was later released on Netflix.
In an interview with DNA, Rishab Shetty shared his perspective on the film being dubbed in various languages. He expressed that the central theme of Kantara—the conflict between man and nature—resonates universally. Shetty believes that people from all corners of the country will be able to relate to this theme, regardless of the language in which the film is presented.
“The emotions are the same. The culture and traditions I have shown in the film such as Bhoota Kola are from coastal Karnataka, but I have represented it through the universal theme of man vs nature conflict. I feel that this conflict is present in each and every corner of India. And the way people are talking about the final 15-20 minutes, the climax of the film, that will stay original, and now, the Hindi speaking people will see in their language, so they will understand it even better. The concept on which I based the film, the conflict between humans and nature is a universal subject”.
