The National Film Awards ceremonies have been delayed by two years due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The 69th National Film Awards, held in 2023, recognized the best Indian films certified in 2021. Rocketry won Best Feature Film, Allu Arjun received the Best Actor award, and Alia Bhatt and Kriti Sanon shared the Best Actress honour. At the 68th National Film Awards, the Tamil film Soorarai Pottru took the top prize, while the late filmmaker Sachy was honored with Best Director for Ayyappanum Koshiyum. Ajay Devgn and Suriya shared the Best Actor award, and Aparna Balamurali was awarded Best Actress.
Founded in 1954, the National Film Awards are managed by the Directorate of Film Festivals. The first Best Feature Film award went to the Marathi film Shyamchi Aai. The most awarded film in the history of the awards is Ashutosh Gowariker’s Lagaan, which garnered eight honours in 2002. The awards not only celebrate the best films across India but also recognize regional cinema and present the prestigious Dadasaheb Phalke Award for lifetime achievement. Last year’s recipient of the Dadasaheb Phalke Award was Waheeda Rehman.
